Cambridgeport was mostly agricultural until the construction of the West Boston Bridge (now Longfellow Bridge) in 1793 connected Cambridge to Boston, making it an attractive residential area for people working in Boston. Industrial development in the neighborhood took off in the 1850s, mostly around Central Square, and included the F.A. Kennedy Steam Bakery which was the original home of the Fig Newton cookie. By the 1920s Cambridgeport was almost entirely developed with the many double- and triple-decker homes you see today.
